Special Olympics Oregon athlete Patrick Sinnott is becoming a local celebrity of sorts these days.

Cameos on Out and About with Drew Carney and a commercial spot with University of Oregon football star Joey Harrington for Polar Plunge Oregon has his family and friends calling Patrick "Mr. Popular" around the house and in his community. "He loves it, but he's really very humble about it," said his mom, Alisa.

In addition to his love of basketball and his budding celebrity, Patrick's also holding down two jobs -- one in the athletic department at Lewis & Clark College and a similar position at Central Catholic High School, where his mom also works. "My husband and I have instilled in all of our children since day one that they are all capable of doing whatever they set their minds to and we don't expect anything less from Patrick," she said.

"What Special Olympics Oregon has always done is allow him to display his talents. It has given him great confidence and a sense of belonging." With her son stepping forward to now add Polar Plunger to his growing resumé, Alisa Sinnott, wants you to know that your plunge will make a difference.

"Special Olympics Oregon gives people like Patrick and others the pride and support they need carry on. That's what being in a community is all about. We're raising funds for the community."

Resources for Team Building and Fundraising
It's not too late to sign-up, build a team and/or raise money on behalf of a plunger for Special Olympics Oregon.

Here's a strategy to raise $500 in a week.
Day 1: Start by sponsoring yourself for $25
Day 2: Ask 3 family members to sponsor you for $25
Day 3: Ask 5 friends to donate $15
Day 4: Ask 5 co-workers to sponsor you for $10
Day 5: E-mail 15 people and ask for a $10 donation
Day 6: Ask your company for a $75 contribution
Day 7: Ask 2 businesses you frequent for $25

And, in the spirit of fundraising success:

Special Olympics Oregon Events on as Scheduled for 2010
Special Olympics Oregon wraps up 2009 strong and growing
Statewide participation up significantly in '09 with positive net revenue for the year

Special Olympics Oregon is pleased to report that they closed 2009 with continuous growth in athlete participation and an increase in revenue – all while maintaining more than 90 percent of its service delivery statewide.

"Despite a recent national news story to the contrary, Special Olympics Oregon had a strong 2009 and is actually growing," said Margaret Hunt, CEO of Special Olympics Oregon. "Thankfully, for our organization and our thousands of athletes, we prepared in late 2008 for an uncertain economy. We were able to use 2009 to get a jump start on creative approaches to fulfill on our mission by ensuring anyone who wanted to compete in Special Olympics events could do so. We've been able to put 2009 behind us, come out stronger and are poised to grow in 2010."

She credits Special Olympics Oregon's growth in revenue and participation to a focus on more events across Oregon -- 37 last year -- grassroots "Invitational" competitions in local communities, its annual Youth Games initiative with NIKE, fundraisers like Polar Plunge and a large support base of corporations, individuals and foundations.

If someone you know is eager to help Special Olympics Oregon programs you can tell them it's as easy as agreeing to Take the Plunge or supporting a plunger by donating through the "Too Chicken to Plunge" program. Visit PlungeOregon.com to learn more.
