| Why I Plunge by Sheriff Larry Blanton, Deschutes County |
I participate in the Polar Plunge for two reasons. The first reason is that I fully support the great work of Special Olympics Oregon. Because of Special Olympics, children and adults with intellectual disabilities gain self-esteem that carries from the athletic field into everyday life.
The second reason that I participate is that the men and women of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office have a passion for helping others. As their leader, I show them my support not only with my word but by standing next to them in the freezing waters of the Deschutes River.
Sheriff Blanton has been in law enforcement in Oregon for almost 30 years. Most recently, he served as Undersheriff of Deschutes County. He and his wife of 31 years have lived in Bend all their lives. They have two sons, Chad, a fireman paramedic for the City of Portland, and Shawn, is employed at Hooker Creek Equipment Company in Bend. |

| High School Challenge |
This year marks the first official Polar Plunge Oregon High School Challenge. The High School that raises the most money for Special Olympics Oregon will earn the right to proudly display the Polar Plunge traveling trophy in their school for the remainder of the year.
Central Catholic and Tigard High are already in on the challenge for the Columbia plunge, and Bend, La Pine, and Mountain View High Schools are getting in on the challenge for Polar Plunge Deschutes.
